‘RTL remains the leader in two of the criteria’ On July 17 2012, Médiamétrie released the results of its French radio audience figures for the period of April to June 2012. Notwithstanding a dip in cumulative audiences on the survey, RTL Radio remained the absolute market leader throughout the season. The Médiamétrie '126,000 Radio' survey for April to June 2012 wraps up the 2011/12 season with its more than 43.3 million daily listeners (compared with 42.5 million in the prior year). Despite a fall in its cumulative audience over this last wave, which caused it to be supplanted by NRJ in this category, RTL Radio still is the clear leader in terms of market share with 11.6 per cent (previous year: 11.5) and daily listening time per listener with 2 hours 26 minutes (previous year: 2 hr 25 min), well ahead of NRJ and France Inter.

Christopher Baldelli

In an interview with the media magazine Ozap, Christopher Baldelli, Chairman of the Board of RTL Group’s French radio stations, takes stock: "RTL remains the leader in two of the audience criteria: the listening time per listener and the market share. It is second only in terms of cumulative audience by a very small margin of 0.2 per cent or fewer than 100,000 listeners. RTL is by far the market leader in terms of audience share (or market share, editor’s note), which is the most relevant criterion for the market because of its commercial value and in which NRJ only hits fourth position." Cumulative audience measures the percentage of people who listen to the radio at least once during the day. Market share, meanwhile, also considers the duration of listening time.

"Our goal is to become the leader in the three criteria," says Baldelli. "But I’m not setting a timeframe for this." The MD is now focusing on changes to the autumn schedule, including the arrival of Laurent Bazin who replaces Vincent Parizot on the morning show.

Over the whole season from September 2011 to June 2012, RTL Radio remains the clear leader in terms of market share (11.7 per cent), cumulative audience (11.8 per cent), listening time per listener (2 hours 21 minutes per day) and at all times (767,000 listeners). In total, an average of 6.2 million listeners listened to RTL Radio per day.
