The Spanish TV landscape has changed dramatically in 2005. Firstly, new analogue terrestrial channels have been awarded and they will try to find their place on the competitive Spanish market.

 
Antena 3 takes the lead in a changing environment

Antena 3 in Spain also has every reason to be proud of last year’s performance: In the lucrative demographic of under 55-year-old viewers, Antena 3’s 23.2 percent market share made it the country’s most popular channel for the first time, ahead of Telecinco (22.8 percent) and TVE1 (16.3 percent). The channel also took a big step towards market leadership in total audience.

 
In 2005 RTLII stayed the leading second generation channel in Germany

The success of RTLII relies on several key pillars like films, action & science fiction series, docu-soaps and science magazines. RTLII is one of the leading channels to broadcast American blockbusters movies. “Con Air” reached for example 19.3% audience share on adults 14-49.

 

 
RTL Group increase shareholding in Leading German News channel n-tv to 100%

In November 2005, RTL group has reached an agreement with its current partner, CNN, to acquire the remaining 50% in the news and business channel n-tv. This takes RTL Group’s shareholding in n-tv to 100%. This acquisition is subject to approval by the cartel and regulatory authorities.

 
World Cup 2006 – schedule of matches on RTL

The Football World Cup in Germany will be the most important TV event of the year. RTL becomes the first German private broadcaster to obtain broadcast rights to World Cup matches. 
The leading German channel will broadcast 8 Sunday matches excluding the final. RTL will also show summaries of all matches during its news coverage and a daily World Cup magazine.

 

 
RTL KLUB again leader in 2005

2005 has been a tremendous year for the first Hungarian private channel RTL Klub; RTL Klub has been leading the Hungarian television market for the whole year with an average 36.5% audience share against adults 18-49 (prime time, January – December 2005).

 
Belgian news on PSP

In co-operation with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Benelux, RTL TVI and VTM now offer their 7pm news bulletin on the portable PlayStation (PSP). Users can download 40 minutes of news onto their game consoles. The service is free.  RTL TVi is the first French speaking TV channel in the world which offers news programmes on PSP.

 

 
A Good Year for RTL Group Channels In Belgium

RTL Group’s Belgian channels posted excellent year-end results: The three channels RTL TVI, club RTL and Plug TV commanded a joint market share of 31.8 percent among TV viewers above the age of four in 2005 – a 0.8 percent improvement vs. the previous year that once again confirmed the group of channels as  South Belgium ’s market leader.

 
RTL Nederland, KPN & Dutch Railways start Television in trains

Since December 2005 RTL Nederland, NS – the Dutch Railways – and telecom operator KPN have started television broadcasting in trains. Travellers on the intercity line Haarlem – Heerlen/Maastricht can watch “NStv” a 15 minutes programmes encompassing news, travel tips, sport and entertainment produced by RTL Nederland’s news department.

 
M6 has signed star sport journalist to do the commentary of FIFA World Cup

M6 has secured live coverage of 31 of the 64 games of the next World Cup in Germany.  M6 has also signed star sport journalist Thierry Roland to do the commentary of the World cup matches. Former World champions Franck Leboeuf and Christophe Dugarry will act as consultants.

 
M6 develops its News broadcasts

M6 wants to improve its news coverage and continues its transition to becoming a major generalist channel and the most popular channel watched by population under 50. From end of January on, M6 will launch a daily midday news broadcast (“12.50”). Lunchtime news is an important viewing moment for the French population as it is in all European Latin countries.  The new programme will be presented by Anne-Sophie Lapix (pictured) who recently joined M6 to present the prime time news magazine “Zone Interdite”.

Growth of news and weekend timeslots on RTL

Latest  Mediametrie 126 000 radio survey confirmed RTL’s leadership in French radio landscape. The generalist radio station recorded an all day audience share of 11.4% and almost 6 million daily listeners. Morning news session (06:00-09:00) attracted 3.6 million daily listeners (Monday – Friday). RTL grew strongly against the 25-49 target groups and added 451 000 adult listeners on weekends year-to-year thanks to its new programming.
